Rusty,

you may be interested in James R. Rummel's excellent blog:

http://www.hellinahandbasket.net/

He's been a charity self-defense instructor for a very long time (mostly for victims of domestic violence), though IIRC he recently retired from it or is in the process of doing so. Lots of good information about handguns and such.

Old friend...

I wanted something my wife could handle while I was on the road and she's home alone. The best defense being a good offense, we got a shotgun, the kind the Coast Guard uses (won't bore/impress you with the particulars), and keep it under our bed. I wanted something that would knock down anyone coming up the stairs to our bedroom. Because we don't have kids, we're not concerned about anyone but the two of us using it. And we've both learned to use it very ably.

Glad to see you've crossed over to the armed side.

LotharBot,

Thanks for the link, it looks like a good blog. And thanks for your new blog... I'll link to it here and at SCO this weekend.

Greg,

Yeah, my getting armed should have happened a long time ago. Re: a shotgun, I'm considering that as well (and it will be a topic for one of the posts in this series). As should be obvious, a shotgun beats a handgun... but one step at a time.
