Excellent post. At my congregation it is often called "seeker friendly", and the response is that we want to be friendly to the seeker, but without watering down the Word of God.

Relating to the culture is all well and good, but when that requires a change in Scripture that is where the relation should and must end.

I think a watered down message of God and salvation through Jesus, would lead to believers that are weak and without much good fruit. It would be like the seed that is scattered upon rocky places. It also seems like it is feeding candy to our children, just because it makes them happy. In the end it will not be for their benefit and in the end that child fed in that manner may end up hating the parent that fed them in that manner.

The greatest show of love and compassion we can show to the culture is one that is ultimately full of truth, wisdom and is in the best interests of the culture that is in desperate need of salvation.

Truth is the issue, not the culture. As long as it is true to Scripture, then if that means being wrong to the culture, then so be it. For it is better to be truth to God, then truth to the culture of God's creation.

Blessings,
Bryan
